During the initial visit, we review your medical history, identify the chief complaint,

measure vitals, take tongue and pulse readings- all of which determine your custom

treatment plan.  To achieve an accurate tongue diagnosis, please avoid using a tongue scraper the day of the appointment.

We recommend patients wear loose clothing and bring a scarf or sweater to wear post-treatment.  Also, please eat a light snack and avoid drinking coffee or other food/drinks that contain caffeine approx 60min before your appointment.  Avoid the consumption of alcohol or use of tobacco products 24 hours before and after your appointment time.

 Acupuncture & How it Feels

Acupuncture is the use of thin, sterile, single-use needles inserted at specific points on the body to create a sense of relaxation or increased energy depending on the chief complaint, treatment protocol, and medical history.  Expected sensations may be a mild heaviness or pressure, feelings of warmth or coolness, dispersing action, grasping sensation, awakening of other regions in the body.  Most patients have a pleasant acupuncture experience and believe the benefits outweigh any discomfort.

NOTE:  patients may be more sensitive if fighting a cold, recovering from illness, have jet lag, or during certain days of a woman's menstrual cycle.

Treatments, Scheduling & Frequency

  • NEW patients:   plan for approx 90min appointments.
  • EXISTING patients:   plan for approx 60min appointments.

The number of treatments depends on whether the condition is acute or chronic, past medical history, body constitution and responsiveness.  Treatments are cumulative and a series of treatments is recommended sometimes along with herbal formulas or nutritional supplements.  Consistency and patient compliance are important.

  • ACUTE conditions:   weekly treatments for 4-6 weeks (2 treatments/week for 2-3 weeks)
  • CHRONIC conditions:   weekly treatments for 10-12 weeks (2 treatments/week for 5-6 weeks)
